The 2023 floods and Cyclone Gabrielle had made natural hazard risk real for Aucklanders. Awareness was high at 84%, yet fewer than half had an emergency plan. Preparedness activity had fallen below levels seen before those events.
Auckland Emergency Management needed to turn that awareness into practical household action: starting a conversation, making a plan and knowing what to do.
Readiness means having a plan and the confidence to act on it. But emergency planning can feel overwhelming, frightening and easy to put off.
People needed a clear moment to start and a manageable first step. Daylight Saving Weekend offered a familiar household cue: while changing the clocks, make time to talk about emergencies.
Federation developed “It’s time to talk emergencies”, focusing attention on a 48-hour window to talk, plan and act.
